Kafye Baweh Kalyak Blaan

Meet our beautiful lola, Bae Estelita Tumandan Bantilan of the Blaan Indigenous People's Group of Sarangani Province - Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee. The 78-year old “Gamaba” didn’t hesitate to give her graceful smile when I said “Mommy, smile ka naman ang ganda niyo po eh bawal ang nakasimangot.” Support the Blaan Crafts by buying their products thru the Provincial Government of Sarangani in Alabel Town or visit their community shop at Langlifew School of Living Tradition in Malungon town. 😂 #Blaan #Gamaba #Sarangani #Alabel #Philippines #Pilipinas #Indigenous #IndigenousPeople

Bringing back the color for this post, out of my respect for the Blaans.

Progress is good right? But is our definition of progress the kind of progress that the indigenous people need?
Last weekend, I was given the opportunity to engage with several Blaan leaders in General Santos City. They shared with me their stories of struggle, discrimination, bullying, and hopelessness. But they are not backing out. They’re still there to stand firm for their culture and rights.

I am honored to have worn this Blaan attire. A symbol of their greatness, kindness, and culture.
Soon, the public will have access to watch and listen to the story of the Blaans. And I am grateful to have shared my voice to tell their story.
